K-10 students with additional learning and support needs, including reading difficulties, may need adjustments to support their participation in the Premier's Reading Challenge.
Adjustments are actions taken that enable a student with disability and/or additional learning and support needs, including those with reading difficulties, to access and participate in their curriculum on the same basis as their peers.
The types of adjustments for the Premier’s Reading Challenge will vary according to the needs of the individual student, and the books being read. Adjustments provided for the Premier’s Reading Challenge should reflect the type and level of adjustments the student is provided in the classroom to independently read texts.
Collaborative planning, involving parents or carers, alongside teachers, and the student, where appropriate is recommended to determine the most appropriate adjustments for students, with disability and/or additional learning and support needs.
Teachers and parents are encouraged to find strategies to support students with learning difficulties to read books that are appropriate to their maturity level and interests from their correct Challenge level.
Adjustments may include:
- Attempting a 3-10 challenge rather than their grade-appropriate challenge level
- Having someone read the book to the student
- Having someone read the book with the student
- Reading the book with support of an audio book/text to speech software/ reading pen
- Listening to the story being read using an audio book/text to speech software/ reading pen
- Reading with braille or large print books
- Sign support, such as Auslan, Key Word Sign or Makaton as required
Students on the 3-10 challenge are able to read and experience books from all challenge levels (including K-2) with whatever supports and adjustments are appropriate to meet their individual learning needs. More information about the 3-10 challenge level can be found here.
